Was googling ''antique rocking horses, and saw your Bessie..what a lovely story. Our old school had an Ayres horse, but a swing stand horse, and i loved him , but in 1965 he disappeared, to be replaced by a new rocking horse who just lacked the beauty of the Victorian one..I have collected rocking horses , as I never had one as a child! [I always wished for one, very hard, every christmas and birthday, but was never lucky enough to be given one!I have several old bow rocker horses now, and it would be very interesting to see a picture of Bessie before she was restored..old horses sadly are often overpainted, but I understand that Bessie is very much a ''Working Horse'' so one in ''antique condition'' would not be suitable!..she has obviously been very well loved judging by the reinforcements to her bows! I would think she will be remembered by lots of old pupils..I still remember with great fondness our old school horse, and I bought an exact model of the school horse a few years ago from an auction. Hopefully, Bessie will remain t the school for another hundred years or more..As to her being an Ayres horse, I am not certain that she IS an Ayres, as I feel she is older than that..her hooves are different from Ayres horses, and the general shape looks like an older horse..but it is difficult to be certain, either way, she is a very old horse, well over 120 yrs.
