Free School Meals
Free School Meals
At Kitchener Primary School, we want to ensure that every child has access to a healthy, nutritious meal each day. Free School Meals are available to families who meet certain eligibility criteria, and applying can also help the school access additional funding to support pupils.
Who is Eligible?
Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals if you receive one of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Income-Based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance
- Guarantee Element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (with an annual income of less than £16,190)
- Universal Credit, where net household earnings are less than £7,400 per year
Please note: families receiving Working Tax Credit only are not eligible for Free School Meals.
How to Apply
Applications are made directly through Cardiff Council. You can apply online using the link below:
Once your application has been processed, the council will notify you of the outcome and inform the school if your child is eligible.
Important Information
Free School Meals are awarded to individual children rather than families. If your child changes school within Cardiff, eligibility will continue and your new school will be notified automatically.
Children who were eligible for Free School Meals before 1 April 2019 remain protected under transitional arrangements until at least 31 December 2023, even if family circumstances change. From 1 January 2024, new eligibility will be assessed under updated national criteria.
Need Help?
If you need help completing the application or would like to discuss eligibility, please contact the school office. All enquiries are treated confidentially.
